Artist's Statement
I am inspired by the full range of character in nature, from the subtle and simple to the bold and dramatic. I often feel especially connected and drawn to the intimate, unique and sometimes even abstract elements of nature. In my photography, I strive to express all of these aspects of my experience with the natural world.
Each of my photographs involves a commitment to the time and effort required to realize this vision, from initial inspiration to the final print. Adaptability is important too, though, as the unpredictability of nature can provide opportunity for spontaneous creativity.
I am energized and connected when I am in the field with my camera and enjoy the satisfaction of creating the final print. It is my hope that my work can move and inspire people, and perhaps help them to see the natural world differently than before.
Biography
I live in Boulder, Colorado at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. From here, it’s only a short drive for me to get to incredible places such as Rocky Mountain National Park and the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The rest of the Colorado mountains are within reach in only a few hours. And in a day, I can be at some of my other favorite places in the Tetons, Yellowstone or the canyon country of Utah.
Nature and wilderness have always been a part of my life, from my earliest days hiking and camping in the Sierra Nevada of California with my family. We moved to Colorado when I was 11 years old and exploring the mountains of Colorado and nearby Southwest deserts continued to deepen my love of the outdoors. In my twenties, I spent three summers living in Yellowstone National Park, working when I had to but spending all of my free time hiking and backpacking in Yellowstone, the Tetons and other parts of Wyoming and Montana. Later, I also spent some time living in the Cascades of Oregon and exploring the Pacific Northwest. But Colorado kept bringing me back.
I have been creating art most of my life, largely drawing and painting at first, with some experimentation in other media. However, photography is where I eventually found my strongest connection. It began from frustration with the snapshots I took on my hiking and camping trips. The cheap prints I got back never even came close to the beauty I’d actually seen. So I decided to work at mastering the camera and photographic process in order to capture that beauty on film. Through this process, I discovered a love for the medium of photography and an developed an ability to express my experiences with nature that goes beyond just "capturing" what is there.
Colorado and its neighbors still provide great places for me to explore and photograph, but I also enjoy places in the greater west and beyond. I’m currently working on a National Parks project and travelling to new parks (or revisiting familiar ones) whenever I can.
